Unveiling of Vimy Memorial


Jul 26, 1936 - The Vimy Memorial project took designer Walter Seymour Allward eleven years to see built. King Edward VIII unveiled it on 26 July 1936 in the presence of French President Albert Lebrun and a crowd of over 50,000 people, including 6,200 attendees from Canada.

Walter Seymour Allward


(18 November 1876 – 24 April 1955) Creator of the Canadian National Vimy Memorial in France. Was a Canadian monumental sculptor widely praised for his "original sense of spatial composition, his mastery of the classical form and his brilliant craftsmanship."
